Mafia Island animal rescue stories from Tanzania: the dogs and cats saved by Animalia, and news from our sterilization and vaccination campaigns

For over 20 years, Animalia Mafia Island has cared for the animals of this small island off the coast of Tanzania. Most village dogs and cats here have never seen a vet. Many are free-roaming, some are injured or abandoned, and until recently culling was the only answer to overpopulation.

We offer a humane alternative. Twice a year, volunteer vets from Tanzania and abroad travel to Mafia Island and set up field clinics in the villages. In each campaign they sterilize, vaccinate against rabies and treat hundreds of animals, free of charge for their owners. Thanks to regular vaccination, there have been no confirmed cases of rabies on the island for many years.

Between campaigns the work continues. Four volunteer foster homes look after rescued dogs and cats until they find a family, and we feed the free-roaming animals of Utende and Maruhubi every day.

On this blog you will find rescue stories, news from the field and updates on Mafia Island animal welfare. Every story was made possible by people who chose to help. If you would like to be one of them, visit our Campaigns page.
