The observed results consequent to 20 years of vet campaigns indicate an effective control canine rabies, other illness and demography, therefore human exposure to rabies.
Regularly repeated sterilization / vaccination campaigns targeting the owned-free-roaming dog population guarantee an effective and constant control of demography shown in the years to come.
Statistical research ascertained that culling of dogs is not an effective method of rabies and demography control and is counter-productive.
Culling dogs is indiscriminate. The majority of dogs killed are owned-free-roaming dogs which are friendly and easiest to kill, but also easiest to vaccinate and sterilize. When killed, they are removed from the vaccinated population and simply replaced by the owners.
Previous studies in Tanzania have shown that less than 1 % of dog population is truly feral dogs, consequently it implies that vaccination / sterilization campaigns, aiming owned-free-roaming dogs population, is sufficient to control rabies and demography in both urban and rural areas, as the size of the feral dog population is negligible.
As we’ve observed the significant increasing in requests for sterilization and vaccination of dogs and cats from the local community, recognizing the pressing need for a structured professional approach, we’ve been fortunate to collaborate with specialized veterinary organizations to further our mission.
Since 2018, we have started to have the services of Every Living Thing (ELT), clinic and shelter in Dar es Salaam, Mbwa Wa Africa (MWA) clinic and shelter in Arusha, Four Steps for Freedom – Charity Organization Glasgow Scotland by Mrs Phyllis Hutchison and Worldwide Veterinary Service (WVS) of UK.
Considering just from September 2019 to November 2022, despite COVID, the following veterinary campaigns were carried out, and 972 dogs were sterilized (neuter and spay).
Particularly dogs are mentioned because they are the ones who mostly abandoned, mistreated or undernourished, however also cats and donkeys have been sterilized, vaccinated and treated.
Almost another 550 animals have been treated in addition to dogs.
These are the results of 16 days November 2022 Vet Campaign:
- 370 animals received veterinary cares.
- 292 animals were sterilized, vaccinated, and treated for endoparasites: dog 212: dog females 126 and dog males 86, cat 80: cat females 55 and cat males 25.
- 49 puppies and 29 already neutered in the past were treated with Rabies booster vaccine.
- Every sterilized animal was also vaccinated against Rabies and received anti-parasitic treatment.
- Many other animals have been groomed and cleaned from ticks, as well as treated with anti-parasitic treatments.
